About the data
An active attack occurs when an individual or individuals is actively killing or attempting to kill multiple unrelated people in a public space.
The key word is actively. The definition excludes events that law enforcement learns of only after they end, such as many family annihilations in a private home; first responders are typically alerted to an active attack while it is happening. Even so, more than half of these attacks end before law enforcement arrives, because civilians stop the attacker or the attacker stops (flees or dies by suicide). Any weapon counts, whether a firearm, a knife or a vehicle, as long as the intent is to kill as many people as possible.
ALERRT began collecting data on active shooter events in 2010 to understand how they unfold and to inform its training, and in 2013 joined the FBI to form an Active Shooter Working Group that supports the FBI’s annual reports. Around 2018 the definition widened from firearms to any weapon, and the data became the Active Attack Data: every FBI-documented firearm attack, plus the non-firearm attacks identified by ALERRT’s research team.
For how “active attack” differs from terms often used in the media, see Sandel & Martaindale (2022), What Are We Talking About? Definitional Confusion Within Active and Mass Shooting Research, Journal of Mass Violence Research.

Updates
11/06/26 - Redesigned the site: a new home page, a header with key numbers on each Active Attacks tab, figures restyled with one colour per tab, a fixed count on the state map (Delaware, which has no recorded attacks, had been shown with one), and interactive plots that fit any screen.
11/06/26 - Redesigned the Fact Sheet tab and the downloadable fact sheet PDF. Both now show each figure for 2025 next to 2024 and the 2020–2024 average, add a map of where the 2025 attacks happened, and are built directly from the data. The numbers themselves are unchanged.
11/06/26 - Corrected the “relationship” variable in the downloadable data: 33 attacks by former employees had been coded as “other” instead of “coworker” (coworker is now 99 attacks, other 7). The relationship figures on the Active Attacks page are updated to match. The “location_primary” variable now also carries separate “Church” and “Military base” levels, previously pooled into “other”; the figures still group them with other locations. The codebook has been updated to reflect both changes.
09/14/26 - Moved medical facilities (e.g., hospitals) into the “Business” location type so that the website matches the fact sheet. The “location_primary” variable in the downloadable data now carries a separate “Medical facility” level; these events were previously pooled into “other”. The codebook has also been updated to reflect the change.

09/09/26 - Added a link to the Research Ring website.
09/08/26 - Update to v2025 data. The downloadable fact sheet is now a .pdf.
12/04/25 - Added “fact sheet” tab and downloadable fact sheet to the Active Attacks page.
08/29/25 - Changed the section title “fatalities” to “casualities” and added information on the number of wounded.
08/27/25 - Gradient color schemes were removed from plots to avoid double encoding of attack counts/percentages.
06/20/25 - Disaggregated the “Business” category of the “location_primary” variable in the downloadable data. The original category is now split into three: office, factory/warehouse, and retail. The codebook has also been updated to reflect the change.
